Will veganism save the world?
Be VEGAN if you want to, BUT You won't save the planet.
1. Its more costly and risky to resources (soils especially) to try and grow crops everywhere- both with or without irrigation. ( there is more of course , including dietary requirements, high risk of salinity and shocking soils in Savannah and Grassland-but not the focus here )
2 We do not live in the Garden of Eden where we might harvest parts of plants for every season .If we are going to be good conservationists, we need to be realists about where we live. Understand and use the resources we do have well.
3 Where we do live is in ecosystems called Savannah or Grassland. ( sparse trees) Time to call all greenies to recognize the right place for trees. In Savannah trees are sparse and or temporary so the right place for trees is not all over the place.
This is where we really live now Grassland
(like most of Africa , much of the US and mid latitudes) means 3-6 months of drought each year, which means temporary GRASSLAND and temporary lots of things. ( Annual plants dominate ). Grass is the main crop - not trees, as many falsely believe.
Here to compare is tropical savannah which is also grassland

--The only animals that can digest grass are ruminants. (Built with a number of stomachs and teeth to chew cud ) The animals that don't die in the annual drought , or that aren't eaten while in their prime, can often starve. Even a good set of front teeth
won't last, so older animals miss out on a good feed in a grassland when the grass is short or "gone to seed “.If you want to worship nature respect the fact that animals will starve, kill and die in big numbers.
3. If we are going to help solve the real problems of sharing and have something to share ( which we can do because the earth produces abundantly in season ) we need to be realistic , not idealistic about nature.
4. We should IMO feel the hurt of death; including of our own fellow creatures , but let's not let that reality turn us away from our choices within reality . If Nature is, or appears to be cruel ; , we don't need to be ..
We often have the choice to cull, for example ; That is, culling can be considered if its not cruel. Culling can be , not only a high "calling" but a desperately dangerous ambition (eg Pol Pot ):
Difficult choices and balance in those choices.
To be truly human is be involved in the tough decisions and not, as many do, avoid the possibility and necessity of choices
Culling or population control is often the lesser of two evils, but it can be also the right thing to do . Being cruel to be kind is an inadequate phrase, but it spells out the reality we need to teach each other and our children .
We don't have to do culling cruelly or with much pain eg on a farm with animals you care about. None of this is easy but it can be necessary if we are to live inside and with nature . A gun is needed on a farm to shoot your horse / // ,,/ sick ,,, /,,,,,,,,before it suffers more after a nasty fall/ injury !
On the mutual beneficial side ; Fat is what gives flavor to the eater ( protein is tasteless which is why you don't let meat dry out ) and comfort to the owner . Enjoy the productive season while it lasts. Combine the animals enjoyable moments with yours. Share the fat and the flavor and stop pretending you don't enjoy it
Go on --do what you would do - eat up on your last days and enjoy it .
Give the old folks with no teeth a cruise .
So you don't believe me ?

Grants - a dumb expensive and unsustainable way to motivate people in key conservation matters
Most of the growing budget in handouts for conservation purposes is not only unsustainable, its not right , Our taxes badly used.
The big budget should be going to provide jobs for our young people in helping better manage and plan land water and plant use. Instead of that its being eaten up in tokenistic grants and advice and action that's not only skin deep but also often not appropriate in the site
Take the current inducements - bulbs, panels and insulation --- cost the earth but every one loves em
We as a culture will be judged as overly self focused rich token generation conservationists who pay ourselves for being good.
Everybody is going to church singing the right choruses about what they put in the plate ,but ignoring the big real world problems outside .
Inducement theory and practice is totally out of control in Australia.
-we MUST stop giving carte blanche to this simple attractive idea - we can't motivate people with money to have the right attitude ( critical aim )Sure we can get them to do things , but in a rich country like ours they should just do them mostly out of their own pocket .
Inducements ARE a huge problem because its far too popular an idea with polys and Ps's who if you really think about it ---love to spend our money on them . The popularity of the simple is very easy to understand with polys .
Much of your taxes already goes on them instead of towards educated countercultural moves like it used to . Education is now dismissed for direct action which is can be impossible to achieve as real conservation requires place driven consensus .
Inducements are already blowing the budget on these measures which like insulation also attempt to reward the unmotivated .
We should be inspiring people with the idea, not trying to always drag them into it . Modern market motivational theory has a low view of humans , not the high one we once accepted . This view ,in my view, is inspirational.
Inducements also reward token efforts and this focus on the superficial can push all the hard basket items off the agenda . Now that the public have taken the conservation agenda off those who study it we find " everyone is happy they are doing a good job "

RIGHT
Everybody is going to church singing the right choruses but ignoring the big real world problems outside .
WRONG
WHY the CONFUSION
So why do our leaders deviate from true market driven progress practice on this ? Its because they like the idea of power over people and they read books that tell them they can have it this other way . The poorly educated and unprofessional decisionmakers on this take the sociologist Shoemaker's concept of the "laggard "as an excuse for what they falsely see as "inducing progress "-Sorry they/we are not that clever.
Even the proper use of "laggard" in technological adoption is disputed amongst those who practice . I would dispute it often because in ecosystems the big picture can overide the blimp of a mere technological innovation ( to which the theory might apply)

Conservation that Works is a deeply countercultural process that needs constant reinforcement to work well - its a bit like faith, where you need to keep going back each week to be reminded why the TV is wrong about blatant consumption. Education and its inspirational elements are the primary requirement . Coercion: even economic coercion is unsustainable
Conservation that Works is a way of thinking ( eg longterm Vs shortterm) that is not necessarily costly ( eg in long term for everyone it pays ) but if not run as counterculture, it can be just very expensive trinkets and token efforts -

Modelled as it often is now only in purely mechanistic and market terms it lumbers along and will eventual drain taxpayers of any incentive to do it . The TRUMP card is out there and will be played - whether we like it or not. There is too much BS talk
Great evil can and is being done in the good intention of environment and the sus name of market and demand pressures .We live in a culture of blinkered and hypocritical views.

If you don't see this yet I am not surprised Most people don't.,We all desperately want to think we are doing the right thing by the environment. the good thing is that many are trying I am saying we must work smarter not sacrifice too simply as the world is a resilience haven for the careful
..
Why I labor on this point is because of very serious matters that should concern us all .
First, conservation can work (and be +ve fun ) but it must be practiced properly . To do this we need to accept denial , dismiss the superficial and insist on dedicated discipleship on the ground. You can't see the positives unless you study all sides .
Secondly, to maintain the educational component of sound teaching on conservation theory and practice our young people should be working in this area - instead of that , the money that used to be going that way is being used on handouts to our generation . its wrong
History will show that the growing budgeting problem with inducements is because they are far too popular with polys and build big government - have to have accountability departments . we are self perpetuating the red tape problems.
Take the insulation and solar panel lights question , Peter Garrett fortunately saw the problem with it getting out of hand and so should we ! .
Please ask Q or put your point. We as a culture will be judged as overly self focused rich token generation conservationists who pay ourselves for being good.
Motivating others to do the right thing with our money has got knobs on it .Study to show yourselves approved.,,,,OR shutup and ,,,,

Conservation as welfare
The low view of human nature inherent in the market driven mind means you may have to pay him to be good . The unsustainability of that idea , let alone its implications in bigger government transfers and nannyism is enough to send those who don't adopt the prison view .....to the nuthouse or to agree with TRUMP " Its not working UR all talk"

Frank ( All saints DOCTOR) is just oh so good. The epitamy of the current struggle of the BUSY caring individual VS corporation and the individaul VS those who use power and process so wel weighted in their favour (Deanna). Yes the efficient deanna is actually helped along by an overly willing business like BUT less busy and fat lined ( eg call meetings whenever they like) process empire builders.
The balance is wrong and wrong because our leaders think business knows best .
The reality is that business knows best how to look after itself - creating their own cosy process building empires at the expense of people who actualy do the work . and true carers can go jump cause they multibag .Now there is a skill you can't fit into those silly myopic performance assessmnent methods these powerbrokers use to whitewash the sepulchres.
Most importantly for those who want to ACTUALLY avoid the neccesary bureaucarcy from becoming its its own worst enemy ( are you really listening - MS PIKE )IS the idea that you must INCREASE the ability of professionals to make decsion --the wider community ( not you !)agrees that they Are BEST to do the job -- and not polys or those who use power and process to win ---politically (Are you listening mr hulls on development along the coast or just hoping the problem will go away . Why would your children train to be planners? why would the gretaer geelong council even bother to do do the big picture study when the govt will predicatbly find the big picture decision too hard and go lokin in the sand for answers professionals can and should make . stalemate or stupidmate?

Adoption of a few simple scientific principles might help the budget managers overloaded with strategems and signed agreements.
1. Cut cleanly,cut well .
2. Understand the problem, before you propose a solution

Well educated but no idea
A sydney academic on the world today last week had no answers for Sugar farmers .
1. Get big - they've got bigger .
2. Get smarter ( you name it they've done it ! )
Perhaps he didn't say what he really thought-
I wonder if he listens to the media and thinks sugar farming is unsustainable, but wasn't really prepared to say so -he can say that here!-he was unsure of something s but didn't spit out what!--
Pity the truth is now so often a casualty of the war of winning funding for pet projects that tell only half the story !
Don't let the media and wannabe leaders tell capable people what is and is not sustainable http://www.rachel.org
Why not share your wisdom?

Constantly meddling with complex land use issues !
Polys would have you think they know all about it - the most complex issues we face. Whose kidding who, and who is kidding you ?
Between Bob Brown and Mark
Latham they know what to do ( In Tasmania yesterday) - Close down use of the land - it is that simple!
Problems with surgery you say? - lets have none of it !
Dead easy mate.

The ever increasing cost of good advice
"The biggest coronial enquiry in Australia's history was directed at a failure by landuse planners to anticipate the risk of slope movement.
Surely one of the biggest followup enquiries in Australia's history can also be expected to establish just how easily sound effective risk management advice can be lost with restructures and the "privatisation of advice."
The ever increasing cost of good advice?---It need not be so !
